Knihy sú stále najbežnejším vianočným
darčekom.
Je to tak preto, lebo je z čoho vyberať (v
priemernom športovom obchode majú povedzme 30 rôznych druhov lyží, kým
napríklad na pultoch Artfora nájdete viac než 10 000 knižných titulov). A hlavne:
kniha často poteší a skoro nikdy neurazí. Obdarovaný si knihu nanajvýš
neprečíta a predá ju do antikvariátu (alebo ju posunie niekomu ďalšiemu).
Vybrať však tú správnu knihu nie je úplne
triviálne. Pár dobre mienených tipov preto nemôže zaškodiť.
Books are
still the most frequent Christmas present. It’s because you can choose from
many kinds of books (e.g. in a basic sports shop you can find about 30
different pairs of skies, but in (for example) Artforum you can find more than
10 000 different kinds of books). And it is known that a good book will
delight and almost never offend someone. Unless a donee would not read the book
or they just sell it to an antiquate (or they give it to another person).
To choose
the right book is not easy at all so a few well-meaning tips cannot harm you.

A book for an intellectual (men)
This is not
an easy category since you have to draw a right one. The Book of Legendary
Lands by Umberto Eco cannot ruin anything. It is Eco par excellence.
It is deep, heuristic, funny and a little bit crazy book. A reader can learn
something new and also can be an owner of a very beautiful book.

Môže byť, samozrejme, tá istá ako pre
intelektuála. Intelektuálka, s ktorou už 22 rokov tvorím jednu rodinu má však
rada literárne napísané detektívky. To znamená detektívky s literárnou,
“múzickou” pridanou hodnotou.
Pravda o případu Harryho Queberta od Joëla
Dickera je presne taká kniha. Napínavý príbeh majstrovsky prepletený
sliterárnou teóriou. Americký román francúzskeho autora. K tomu niet čo dodať.
A book for an intellectual

Of course
the book can be the same as the one above. The intellectual, with whom I have
spent 22 years of my life, likes to read literary written detectives. It means
that to the book is added the literary “performing” value.
The
Truth about the Harry Quebert by Joël Dicker is the right one. The trilling story masterfully intertwined with
literary theory; an
American novel by French author. There is nothing to say.

To je najvďačnejšia kategória. Rodičia
väčšinou až tak nesledujú knižné novinky a zároveň ich vlastné deti pomerne
dobre poznajú. Takže radosť vyberať.
Pre niekoho bude tou správnou knihou
historický román, alebo niečo súvisiace s otcovým či maminým koničkom.
Žvitná skúsenosť mi cynicky našepkáva, že
pritom netreba zabudnúť na seba. Veď keď si rodičia knihu prečítajú, dajú ju
vám. Mysliac na seba by som teda odporučil Listy Oľge Júliusa Satinského.
Krásna kniha, plná láskavého humoru a s odérom starých čias (konkrétne
šesťdesiatych rokov).

A book for parents
This is the
most grateful category. Parents usually don’t follow the best sellers that much
and their kids usually know all about them. It is a joy to choose.
For someone
a historical novel would be the right choice or something connected with mom’s
or dad’s hobby.
But in this
situation we cannot forget about ourselves. It is well known that when parents
finish the book it automatically ends up in our hands. Thinking about me I
would recommend
Letters
to Oľga by Július
Satinský.
It is a wonderful book full of kind humor and with the
odor of old times (namely the sixties).

Tu si dovolím odporučiť rovno tri výborne
napísané a zároveň krásne výtvarne a graficka spracované knihy.
Hlbokomorské rozprávky Moniky Kompaníkovej
s ilustráciami Veroniky Holecovej sú niečo ako priateľské detské sci-fi: temné
morské hĺbky a v nich prapodivné zvieratá zvieratá, žijúce vo svojom
“alternatívnom” svete.
Žirafia mama a iné príšery. Píše Alexandra
Salmela, kreslí Martina Matlovičová. Šibnuté príbehy žirafých mamách, blatových
príšerách a podobných zvláštnostiach. Nádhera! (VYPREDANÁ)
A ešte krásna knižočka pre úplne malé deti.
Liek pre vĺčika. Knižka, ktorú nakreslila aj napísala skvelá ilustrátorka Danka
Olejníková. Hravé a veľmi pekné to je.
A book for kids
Here I can
recommend three excellently written and also artistically and graphically
beautiful pressed books. Deep Sea Fairytales by Monika Kompaníková with the illustrations by Veronika
Holecová is
something as a friendly children’s sci-fi: the murky depths and these strange
animals with their “alternative” world.
Mother
Giraffe and Other Monsters by Alexandra Salmela and illustrated by Martina
Matlovičová.; crazy stories about giraffe mothers, muddy monsters and similar
traits. Beautiful! (SOLD OUT)
And
finally, another book for the youngest ones is called Medicine for the Wolf
written and illustrated by Danka Olejníková. Very nice and playful.

Fajnšmeker je tá či ten, kto si intenzívnym
čítaním vytvoril závislosť na knihách a neuspokojí sa s hocičím. Takýto človek
má určite rád Pétera Esterházyho a jeho literárne hry, ktoré však svietia
poriadne hlboko.
Vo vynikajúcom slovenskom preklade Renaty
Deákovej práve vyšla jeho najnovšia kniha s bizarným názvom Jednoduchý príbeh
čiarka sto strán – šermovacia verzia.
A Book for a Connoisseur
A connoisseur
is the one who with the intensive reading created an addiction to books and
he/she will not set for everything. This kind of person is sure to love Péter
Esterházy and his literary games which light pretty deep.
Péter
Esterházy’s latest
novel A Simple Story Comma
a Hundred Pages was
pubblished this year and Renata Deáková made an excellent work with translating this
book into Slovak language.

Určite takého máte vo svojom okolí. Často
nosí silné okuliare, číta veľa a pozorne. Takéhoto človeka len tak ľahko
neuspokojíte. Ak však ešte náhodou nemá dvojzväzkové Máraiove Denníky – a je
veľká šanca, že ich nemá, nakoľko len teraz vyšli – tak mu ich treba dať pod
vianočný stromček.
A Book for a Very Serious Reader
You have to
have someone like this in your neighborhood. They often wear thick glasses,
read a lot and carefully. This kind or person cannot be simply satisfied. However, if you still happen to not have the
two-volume Márai Sándor’s
Logs (and there is
a big chance that they don’t have it yet because the books just came out) so
the books have to be put under the Christmas tree.

Áno, aj takýto ľudia sú medzi nami. Ak si
majú niečo prečítať, tak ich to musí chytiť na prvej strane a držať až po
poslednú. Čiže detektívka. Najlepšie severská detektívka. Tie sú v súčasnosti v
móde a je medzi nimi veľa skvelých kúskov.
Vsadením na istotu je dánsky detektívny
veľmajster Jo Nesbø. Pancierové srdce alebo Snehuliak sú dobrým výberom.
Ak chcete prekvapiť menej známym menom, tak
skúste Francka Thillieza. Tiež je to severské krimi, len tentokrát nejde o
Škandináviu, ale o sever Francúzska. Syndróm E. Vzrušujúce čítanie.

A Book for a Person Who Never
Reads Books
Yes, these
people exist too. If they are to read something, it has to be interesting from
the very first page to the very last one; so it’s a detective. The best is
a Nordic detective. Those are currently in the course and among
them are a lot of great pieces. Armored Heart or Snowman by
a Danish detective master Jo Nesbø is a very good choice.
If you want to surprise
someone with a less-known name then you should try Franck Thillieza. It is also the Nordic crime but
this time we are not talking about Scandinavia but the north of France. Syndrom
E. Exciting reading.

To je desivo široká kategória, samozrejme.
Čo všetko sa mladým ľuďom páči! A dokedy je človek “mladý”! Odporúčať čokoľvek
by na tomto mieste bolo naivné a nezmyselné, keby neexistovala kniha, ktorá je
presne o tom.
Aktuálna laureátka Man Booker Prize, čiže
najprestížnejšej literárnej ceny na svete Eleonor Cattonová mala len 23 rokov,
keď napísala svoj literárny debut Na scéně. Píšem po česky, lebo na pultoch
kníhkupectiev je práve v českom preklade. Je to kniha mimoriadne šikovnej
mladej autorky o mladých ľuďoch, o ich extravagantne pravdivej učiteľke hry na
saxofón, o jednom divadelnom predstavení a o tom ako sa na čistej tabuli
detstva z ničoho nič (no, nie celkom z ničoho) objavia temné šmuhy dospelosti.
Je to vtipné, vážne, poetické, napínavé. Prosto: výborná kniha.
A to ešte nie je tá kniha, za ktorú
talentovaná Eleonor dostala Bookera. Tú napísala o štyri roky neskôr a volá sa
The Luminaries.
A Book for a Young Person
It is a
frighteningly broad category, of course. Young people like a lot of things! And how long is a person
“young”? At this point to recommend
something would be naïve and pointless; if there is a book which is exactly about
this.
Eleanor Catton (current laureate of the Man Booker
Prize which is the most prestigious literary prize in the world) was just 23
years old when she wrote her literary debut The Rehearsal. It is a book by
an excellently handy young author about young people, about their extravagant
saxophone teacher, about one theater performance and about how childhood comes
to adulthood. The book is funny, serious, poetic and thrilling. Simply:
excellent book.
But The
Rehearsal is not the book for which talented Eleanor got her Booker. The
book Eleanor got her Booker is called The Luminaries which was written
about 4 years later than The Rehearsal.

Ale viete čo? Úplne najlešie je zájsť do
kníhkupectva, brať do ruky knihy, ktoré vás zaujmú, trochu v nich listovať,
spýtať sa na radu kníhkupcov a potom vybrať knihu, ktorá vás zaujme. Väčšinou
je to veľmi príjemný zážitok.
But you
know what? The best you can do is to go to the actual bookstore, take up a book
that somehow engages your attention, read through pages, ask for the advice and
then just buy it. Usually it is a very pleasant experience.
